Kalye Estudyante : The Budget-friendly Food Strips for the Hungry Student

As another school year begins, a huge wave of zombies is fast approaching. Just kidding, a huge wave of students is set to occupy this university town once again. These students are not just hungry for quality education but also food, food, and more food. After all it’s not easy reading mountains of books and writing heaps of essays and term papers.

Food Trip Dumaguete counts off some of the popular food hubs who offer student budget meals, because good food need not be expensive.

 

Sta. Teresa Restaurants

If you like to eat in groups, then you will fancy Sta. Teresa Restaurants and their family or barkada servings. Their best sellers are their Pork Calamansi and Adobo. One viand can be shared by 2 people and they give out free soup. They also have solo serves, sandwiches and sizzling plates. Included in their wide array of desserts are halo-halo, leche flan, bibingka and a variety of light and fluffy cakes. They have 2 branches, one in Hibbard Avenue, Piapi and the other in San Juan Street.

Sizzling Burger at P78.

Pork with Calamansi is one of their best-selling dishes. It is priced at P68 per serving but it is big enough for two!

Sta. Teresa’s Chorizo is at P35 per stick.

Their halo-halo comes in regular and petite sizes.

 

The Bean Connection
Location: Portal West Building, Silliman Avenue & Perdices Street

The Bean Connection is one of the busiest food places near Silliman University. Location wise, it’s just 5 minutes away from the campus, and during meal time from breakfast to dinner to late night coffee they are always almost full. They serve meals, pastries and coffee. Their best sellers are their rice bowls and their chicken meal which are perfect for students in a hurry and on a budget. Surprisingly, students from others schools also flock to this place for the affordable frappes and cupcakes. Their meals and coffee based drinks are less than a hundred, and their cupcakes range from P30-P50.

Bean Connection’s Chicken Meal is at P76.

Bacon Arroz Bowl. Arroz Bowls range from P45-P75.

Iced Coffee Mocha at P85.

 

Captain Ribbers
Location: Silliman Avenue

Located just beside the Silliman Hall, this place stands out among its neighboring restos because they offer regular and lite servings. They claim to have the best ribs in town, and sure enough they did not disappoint us. Among their best sellers are their Chili Cheese Rockets that are sure to set your palates on fire, along with their Chicken Cordon Bleu and Pork Belly. Their Lite Meals are priced below a hundred, and each serve comes with free iced tea. Their regular serves come with a side dish and range from P100-P250.

Half rack Captain Ribbers Ribs. It is available with your choice of sauce either original, spicy, flaming hot, honey mustard, or oriental. A full rack costs P318. A half rack is priced at P168.

Fish Fingers. Priced at P168 for regular serving and P88 for lite.

Chicken Cordon Bleu. Priced at P158 for regular serving and P88 for lite.

 

Pepe’s Place
Location: Sta. Catalina Street

Pepe’s Place is a relatively new restaurant and they specifically offer a student meal menu all for P55. Each student meal is served with a glass of iced tea. We recommend their Chicken Fillet and Porkchop if you are that hungry, but if you feel like eating a light all-day breakfast treat, try their Chorizo and Egg meal. Aside from their student meals, their best sellers are their Chicken BBQ still below P100 and spicy Gambas ala Guevara.

Qyosko
Location: Sta. Rosa Street

Qyosko has been around for quite some time already. They are known for their Arroz Balao which is essentially a rice bowl with “bulad” toppings for P55 only. Another popular dish they have is their Buttered chicken which you can order in half of whole servings enough to feed a family or barkada of 4-5 people. They also have a café that serves big slices of heavenly cakes. In Qyosko, students can also do all-nighters studying or writing research papers since they are open until the wee hours of the morning.

Qyosko’s buttered chicken is one of their most popular dishes. Half serving costs only P160 and can already feed a group.

Their beef nilaga is good for sharing as well and costs only P160.

Arroz Balao is at P55.

 

Jes & Sol
Location: L. Rovira Road, Bantayan

For dinner, Jes&Sol is the place to be. They serve home cooked meals below P100. However, they open at 6:00PM. They pride themselves of their juicy pork belly grilled to perfection and scrumptious sizzling sisig. Try their honey cured bacon skewers as well along with a pitcher of iced tea. They also serve gourmet sausages (price range: P85-P249) which have become one of the favorite snacks of foreigners here in the city.

Sizzling Sisig for one is priced at P75 and it comes with unlimited rice.

Jes & Sol’s grilled pork belly is for P65 with unlimited rice.

The Swanky Franky is their best-selling sausage. This one is for P165.
