“You are what you eat” so they say. If this were so, then most of us here in Dumaguete would probably be tocino, lechon manok, liempo, or some fancy dish from one the restos here. You see, when you roam the streets of Dumaguete almost every corner has a “manokan”, karinderya or “tocinohan” apart from the numerous fancy restos and coffee shops scattered all over the city. However, nestled just 2 blocks away from the Belfry is a food hub that offers something new, unique and oh so fresh. It’s among the few restaurants here that cater to foodies who prefer local and organic meals. The place is definitely a haven for those who like to eat fresh and healthy food, hence its name Lokal Organic Cafe.
The cafe offers a wide variety of cuisines for breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. Their menu is jampacked with a lot of healthy alternatives to common fast food orders, meat and poultry dishes as well as unique twists to ordinary beverages. Some of the dishes we tried are surprisingly delicious.
The spicy bamboo chicken (P135), one of their best sellers, is a tasty meal with a side of sweet potato or camote fries which will leave you full but wanting for more. If you prefer your meal not too spicy, you could ask them to prepare it just the way you want. They also have a grilled chicken meal (P125) with a choice of rice, sweet potato, or camote fries. Both meals can come with fish instead of chicken. They give you a huge serving of their addictive camote fries or one whole sweet potato along with most of their dishes. Others come with avocado and watermelon salsa.
For those who want to drop by for a quick snack, we suggest the grilled chicken sandwich (P90) with a side of camote fries. They are very generous with their serving of the grilled chicken strips, lettuce, and sauce. This sandwich will surely tide you till dinner time. Fried budbud with tsokolate and mangga (P70) is a perfect way to cap off your meal. It’s Lokal Organic Cafe’s unique take on everyone’s favourite breakfast pairing or merienda. Definitely something you’ll keep coming back for.
Lokal Organic Cafe has a wide selection of healthy drinks to go with your meal. Corn coffee (P40), their healthier alternative, is a favourite among many patrons. They also serve corn coffee with ginger (P55), native brewed coffee (P45), and other caffeinated drinks both iced and hot. Among their selection of juices and shakes, their refreshing cucumber juice (P60) and banana cocoa shake (P75) are our favourites. For those with more adventurous palates can try out their ampalaya juice (P60). For their teas, we recommend the ginger tea (P50).
The dining experience and ambiance of the place is as delightful as the meals one will enjoy at the Lokal Organic Cafe. The dishes are well prepared by their warm and friendly staff as well. The cafe’s servings are definitely a breath of fresh air that breaks the monotony of the deliciously sinful food that other restos offer. We will be back soon to the place that taught us that organic food can take us on a wonderful and tasty gastronomic journey.
As the food culture of this city continues to flourish and evolve, Food Trip Dumaguete will be there every step of the way. And we are taking all of you with us.
